SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Airgas maintains a deep commitment to safety, the environment, our communities and our military personnel and the families who support them.
In 2011, for the third straight year — and fifth time in the last decade — Airgas was recognized by the Compressed Gas Association for having the best safety record among cylinder gas fleets with more than 3 million miles driven. With over 5,000 vehicles in our distribution fleet, Airgas continues to have one of the lowest fleet accident rates of any large fleet in the industry.
Fleet Vehicle Accident Frequency Rate* Preventable Vehicle Accident Frequency Rate* 20073.11.7 20083.01.6 20092.81.5 20103.21.4 20113.01.4 *accidents per million miles driven
Safety remains a priority in our operations. Airgas believes that safety is every associate's responsibility, and we are very proud of our workplace safety track record.

The Compressed Gas Association awarded Duane Young, Director of the Airgas SAFECOR organization, with the Charles H. Glasier Safety Award in recognition of his safety leadership in the industrial gas industry. At Airgas SAFECOR, Young helped develop and implement 28 regulatory compliance systems for Airgas that reduced workplace accident frequency and severity by more than 60 percent and also established Airgas as an industry leader in fleet safety.
- Operations and Fleet Achievements
We designed our newest air separation unit in Clarksville, TN, to be nearly 10 percent more energy efficient than older plants.
Equipped nearly 1,100 Airgas diesel engine trucks with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. This SCR-equipped fleet uses our own AiRx Diesel Exhaust Fluid to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide emissions by as much as 90 percent.
Installed a hydrogen generator that uses steam methane reforming technology at our Sacramento, CA, cylinder fill plant. This process eliminates the cost and emissions associated with transporting hydrogen to the plant.
- Operations and Fleet Achievements
Continued to assist metal fabricators in evaluating their cutting and welding operations and enabled them to increase efficiency, productivity and quality, plus reduce the use of material resources and waste.
Introduced Airgas SmartTag cylinder monitoring technology, which helps customers comply with complex expiration dating on EPA Protocol gases. Also launched Refrigatron™, which fully automates the reclamation of refrigerants — saves time and money and decreases environmental impact.
Developed two lines of compact manifolds and a line of small-profile regulators for use with high-purity gases and gas chromatography. These new lines not only satisfy our customers' analytical needs, they also minimize the use of raw materials.
In addition to many local community service activities, Airgas pursues a number of enterprise-wide endeavors in our role as a good corporate citizen and neighbor — most notably in our ongoing support of Operation Homefront, a non-profit organization that supports America's service members by providing emergency assistance and support to families of deployed service members and to those returning home wounded.
Extended our financial commitment to Operation Homefront to a fourth year, as associates continued to get involved through local chapter activities and fundraisers.
Offered the Airgas "Welding 101" course at no cost to any veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan service who is interested in exploring a career in welding.
Provided more than 365,000 hours of training and learning development to Airgas associates, including course sessions that help them keep their communities safe.
